“The Catacombs of Naples” explores the spectacular monumental complexes dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries that define the Rione Sanità. From the San Gennaro to the San Gaudioso catacombs, the film follows a journey into the “belly of the earth” to reveal a vibrant human capital. Under the visionary leadership of Father Antonio Loffredo, these sacred spaces have been reclaimed and restored by local youths. This model of “bottom-up” management has transformed the neighborhood’s heritage into a source of work and dignity, proving that beauty and culture can spark a “new humanism” in one of Naples’ oldest districts.
